Construction Orientation to Retain Employment (or "CORE")
This program is for people wanting to work in construction and involves two stages; a 12-day preparatory program and a 6 week "CORE" training program. The program is coordinated by Building Opportunities with Business Inner City Society and funded under the Millenium Communty Benefits Agreement.
Weeks 1-3: CORE Stage 1 is an initial 12-day pre-employment training program for people who have been out of the workforce for some time; the program addresses employability skills.
The Stage 1 program will run daily and participants will:
- Create an inclusive and strong learning/working team
- Take part in classes and exercises related to Essential Workplace Skills
- Develop skills in personal problem-solving and interpersonal communications
- Assist others in succeeding in the program
Stage 1 is offered by Tradeworks Training Society in collaboration with Watari Research Association, and S.U.C.C.E.S.S.
Weeks 3-9: Construction Training (delivered by the Vancouver Regional Construction Association).
This program includes:
- Basic tool skills
- Basic carpentry skills
- Basic plumbing skills
- Basic drywall skills
and includes Certification Training
Job Placements: Successful participants will then be helped to find paid work at the future Olympic Village development site to get a good start in the industry.
Applicants should:
- Be legally entitled to work in BC
- Be physically fit
- Be able to adapt to rugged working conditions
- Be in good health, free of vision, hearing, or respiratory ailments
- Be free of issues related to substance abuse or in well established recovery
- Be able to read and understand signs, labels, and lists
- Be able to work in a team
Lunches, light breakfasts, boots, hardhats and rain gear are provided; bus tickets may also be provided. A job coach is available for support on the job-site. Other supports are available to assist participants with housing and related problems.
